When my mother was 12 in Costa Rica, she was diagnosed with an osteosarcoma in her knee. After a few unsuccessful treatments her mother decided to pick up their lives and move to Miami's Jackson Hospital for treatment. Ronald McDonald House allowed them to stay there at a very reduced rate for 2 years. After 3 operations, bone donors that didn't take, chemotherapy, total hair loss, abandonment from some family and friends, a near death experience, kidney deficiency that would remain for the rest of her life, and finally a bone graph from her own right leg and a steel rod from mid-thigh to mid-shin holding everything in place with scars to prove it... she had survived and was cancer-free.

She went to Sunset High School and got a scholarship to International Fine Arts College (Miami, FL) where she studied Graphic Design. She had a dual enrollment with St. Thomas University (Miami, FL) where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts.

After graduation she quickly worked for a large advertising agency in Miami for six years before venturing out on her own to freelance. In 1996, she married her college sweetheart, my dad.

In 2001, just before I was born, my parents started their own advertising agency, working from home so they could take care of me, as well as, work.

My mother was cancer-free for 18 years with yearly check-ups. Unfortunately in March 2004, she was diagnosted with cancer of the gallbladder that had spread to her liver. One year later she passed away.

I am grateful to Ronald McDonald House of Miami for allowing my grandmother and my mother to stay there in a very difficult time of their lives. This is why I've chosen this charity to donate to.
